Avondale's Hometown Hero banners honor local veterans and active-duty service members on streetlights along corridors like Dysart Road. The next set goes up in November 2026, around Veterans Day. Nominees must be serving or honorably discharged and have an Avondale connection. Submissions are due Sept. 30 at AvondaleAZ.gov/HometownHero.

The NASCAR Cup Series Freeway Insurance 500 runs Sunday, Oct. 18 at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale as part of The Chase presented by Mobil 1, with the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series and ARCA Menards Series racing Saturday, Oct. 17. Sunday-only and two-day tickets, camping and hospitality are on sale now, and the track is advertising 20 percent off Cup Series tickets, per its event page.

Bring the dog. The City of Avondale's events calendar lists Barks & Treats on October 3, described by the city as a howl-o-ween pooch party where residents bring their furry friends for a barking good time. It is the first entry on Avondale's fall lineup after Mercados & Melodies on September 25, and it lands a few weeks ahead of Billy Moore Days, which runs October 22 to 25.

Avondale's heritage festival returns with a carnival at 101 E. Lower Buckeye Road: Thursday, Oct. 22, 6 to 10 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 23, 6 p.m. to midnight; Saturday, Oct. 24, 3 p.m. to midnight; and Sunday, Oct. 25, 3 to 10 p.m., per the city's event page. Unlimited-ride wristbands are $17.99 online before Oct. 25 at 5 p.m., $20 at the event and good for one day; an online-only Mega Pass covers all four days for $102.25 if bought before Oct. 22. Parade registration and grand marshal nominations are open, with more details to come.

The family-owned bakery behind two Glendale shops and one on Main Street in Mesa is opening its fourth location in Avondale, targeting mid-October, What Now Phoenix reports. Expect pastries, artisan sourdough, locally roasted coffee and a rotating fresh menu, with a ribbon cutting that hands out muffins, gift cards and prizes. The exact address is still to be announced.

FoodieLand's traveling food festival sets up at Phoenix Raceway, 7602 Jimmie Johnson Drive, Friday through Sunday, Sept. 25 to 27. Hours are Friday 3 to 10 p.m., Saturday 1 to 10 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 10 p.m. The event is ticketed, and the organizer's Avondale page covers general and accessible parking, rideshare, transit, re-entry, kids' tickets and what you can bring. The vendor lineup and ticket prices were not posted on the page when we checked, so confirm before buying.

Angry Chickz opens its first Avondale restaurant Friday, Sept. 11 at 10285 W. McDowell Road, Suite A100, with festivities starting at 11 a.m. It is the Nashville-style hot chicken chain's fourth Arizona location and 47th overall. Per the announcement, "the first 100 guests will receive a limited-edition Angry Chickz jersey, while the first 500 will have the opportunity to enter an on-site raffle for Angry Chickz for a Year and additional food prizes." The menu runs tenders, sliders and bowls with heat levels from "country" to "angry," plus mac and cheese, coleslaw and fries.

Avondale's free trick-or-treat night runs Thursday, Oct. 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. at 4155 S. El Mirage Road. More than 20 themed booths hosted by city departments and community exhibitors hand out candy and treats, and visitors vote for the best decorated booth. There are also free spooky crafts, face painting, a costume contest and a live DJ.

Construction began in March on the Marketplace at Tres Rios, a 28-acre grocery-anchored shopping center north of the Alamar master planned community in Avondale. It will feature a Fry's Marketplace, three multi-tenant shop buildings and seven retail pads. Other tenants have yet to be announced, and no completion date has been given.

Billy Moore Days runs Oct. 22 through 25 with a carnival, live entertainment and food vendors. The city's time-honored parade follows on Oct. 24 with floats, marching bands, dance groups and community organizations.

Luna Grill opened its third Arizona restaurant on Aug. 20 at 9750 W. Indian School Road. The Mediterranean fast-casual spot is the brand's first West Valley location, following Mesa and Gilbert.

Construction is underway on 0.72 acres at Dysart Road and Western Avenue. The city says the December 2026 finish will add illuminated artwork, history panels, shade trees, landscaping, pedestrian paths and a time capsule for Avondale's 100th anniversary.
