Level 1 Arcade Bar is taking the corner of Mill and University

Level 1 Arcade Bar is opening at 4 E. University Dr., the northeast corner of Mill Avenue and University Drive, and the team hopes to be open by Nov. 1. Owner Scott Goldsmith is bringing restored arcade cabinets and pinball machines plus a full kitchen, 20 draft beers and 22 signature cocktails. It becomes Level 1's second active location alongside the Downtown Mesa room at 48 W. Main St.

Roman God of Fire is open on Rio Salado Parkway

Downtown Tempe has moved Roman God of Fire off the coming-soon list and onto the opened-in-2026 one. The address is 80 S. Rio Salado Pkwy., and the pitch is wood-fired Italian cooking inspired by the soul of Rome, with a James Beard Award-winning chef behind the food.

Phantom Fox and Goat and Ram open on Mill Ave Oct. 8

The Mesa brewery and its pizza sibling finally have a date for their Mill Avenue outpost: Oct. 8, with a soft opening the week before, at 525 S. Mill Ave. in the former Illegal Pete's space. Plans call for 20 taps of Phantom Fox beer next to Goat and Ram's wood-fired pizzas, wings and loaded fries, with room for more than 200 people indoors and out. Co-owner Trent Smith on the move: "We think Tempe is going to be a great spot for us."

A jigsaw puzzle race hits Snakes and Lattes on Aug. 23

Downtown Tempe's calendar lists a Ravensburger Puzzle Race Mini Tournament at Snakes and Lattes on Sunday, Aug. 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Alter Ego runs a James Bond themed chef's dinner on Aug. 20 from 6 to 9 p.m., and Mahjong Mondays continue there Aug. 24 and Aug. 31 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Phantom of the Opera runs at ASU Gammage Sept. 16 to Oct. 4

Downtown Tempe's events calendar lists Phantom of the Opera at ASU Gammage from Sept. 16 through Oct. 4 with 7:30 p.m. curtains. Before that, the Tempe Healing Field goes up at Tempe Beach Park Sept. 10 through 13, and ASU opens its football season against Morgan State at Mountain America Stadium on Sept. 5 at 5:30 p.m.

Four new names are headed to Tempe Marketplace

Tempe Marketplace has four tenants on the way: KUIU, opening its first retail store in Arizona this summer with what the center calls an immersive in-store experience, plus Coach, Tommy Hilfiger and Glo Tanning in late 2026. Carhartt has already opened a 6,000 square foot space there, its first standalone retail location in the Phoenix metro.

Street League Skateboarding takes over Mullett Arena Aug. 29

ASU's home opener is September 5 against Morgan State

ASU opens its football season against Morgan State on Saturday, September 5 at 5:30 p.m. at Mountain America Stadium. Closer in, Downtown Tempe's August calendar includes the Ravensburger Puzzle Race Mini Tournament at Snakes & Lattes on Sunday, August 9 and again August 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mahjong Mondays at Alter Ego through the end of the month, and Disney Princess Trivia Night at Snakes & Lattes on August 11.

A historic Tempe house is being restored as a restaurant

Cat Bunnag and Dan Robinson, the owners of Phoenix Thai restaurant Glai Baan, are turning the Gov. Benjamin B. Moeur House and Hatton Hall near Seventh Street and Myrtle Avenue into a dining destination, with an opening set for 2026. The property previously housed Tempe Community Council offices. The concept has not been revealed; the owners have said only that they want a special place for the community to gather, celebrate and unwind.

ASU move-in weekend runs August 13 to 16, according to the Downtown Tempe events calendar, and it is the annual moment downtown Tempe shifts from summer-quiet back to full volume. Worth planning around if you have gotten used to easy parking on Mill Avenue, and worth preparing for if you run a business down there.

KUIU's first Arizona store is coming to Tempe Marketplace

KTAR reports KUIU is opening its first Arizona store at Tempe Marketplace in a 6,000-square-foot space later this summer. Tommy Hilfiger, Coach and Glo Tanning are all listed for late 2026 at the same center, where Carhartt's first stand-alone Phoenix-metro store is already open.

Mill Avenue's new pool hall bar is projected to open in August

Phoenix New Times reported that RePUBLic, a bar and grill with pool tables taking over the former Zuma Grill and Mill Cue Club spaces just south of Sixth Street, and an expansion of C.A.S.A. adding dine in and walk up service, are "both projected to open in August 2026." Projected, not yet confirmed.
