The 2026 Street League Skateboarding Tempe Takeover runs Aug. 29 at Mullett Arena with a custom course. Arizona hosted the first SLS event, and the roster includes Chandler native Dashawn Jordan and Jagger Eaton.

Festival Ranch is finally getting a grocery store

Safeway will anchor Festival Ranch Marketplace, a 114,000-square-foot shopping center at Canyon Springs Boulevard and Sun Valley Parkway in Buckeye. The $45 million development is set to open in the fourth quarter of 2027.

A 24/7 gym with cold plunges is coming to Arizona Avenue

Fitlab AZ is opening its second location at 2375 S. Arizona Ave, Suite 1 in Chandler, with 24/7 access, more than 100 strength and cardio pieces, infrared saunas, cold plunges and compression therapy. Owner Brandon Burden says the team is shooting for a late August or early September opening.

Monster trucks and Wheels & Shields are at Westgate today

Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live Glow-N-Fire runs August 8 and 9 at 11:30 a.m. at Desert Diamond Arena, and Wheels & Shields is at the Westgate Entertainment District on August 8. Cowboys vs. Cardinals follows August 22 at 7 p.m. at State Farm Stadium.

North Peoria's 320-acre core is becoming Five North

Scottsdale-based Lyfe Companies is developing Five North at Vistancia on the 320-acre commercial core of the 7,000-plus-acre master-planned community in north Peoria. Plans include healthcare, light industrial, and a new shopping and dining plaza. No timeline has been announced.

A Beverly Hills bistro is coming to Scottsdale Fashion Square

Porta Via, the California bistro and bar founded in Beverly Hills in 1994, is planning its first Arizona location at Scottsdale Fashion Square, 7014 E. Camelback Road. The opening is set for 2027 and the team is still finalizing details.

Surprise wants 6,500 acres of parks and open space at McMicken Dam

Surprise unveiled a vision for 6,500 acres between Peoria Avenue and Happy Valley Road, putting a few regional parks on 3,500 acres and leaving 3,000 acres to open space and wildlife corridors. The project is in early planning, with public input expected in 2028 once funding is available and full development taking three to 10 years.

Two Buckeye city managers won statewide public works awards

The Arizona chapter of the American Public Works Association named Buckeye Fleet Manager Beth Casillas its Professional Manager of the Year for Public Fleet, crediting her with building the city's fleet division into one of the nation's top-performing municipal fleet programs, and named Environmental Services Operations Manager Robert van den Akker Professional Manager of the Year for Solid Waste.

Cien Agaves opened in Chandler with two patios

Cien Agaves Tacos & Tequila opened its second Arizona location in Chandler on August 5. The 5,000-square-foot restaurant has indoor dining and two outdoor patios, a list of more than 100 premium tequilas and mezcals, daily happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m., and all-day Taco Tuesday specials.

Whole Foods and 99 Ranch are both coming to Arrowhead

A craft beer and barbecue bar opened on Camelback

The Sleepy Whale opened in late July at 100 E. Camelback Road, Suite 160, pairing a craft beer bar with barbecue and bar food. Phoenix New Times named it one of the most exciting new restaurants now open in the city.

A 40,000 sq ft fitness center opens in north Scottsdale this month

HonorHealth's new 40,000-square-foot fitness center at Pima Center, on the west side of the Loop 101 at Pima Road, is set to open in August 2026. It includes an indoor track, heated lap and therapy pools, a sauna, pickleball courts, outdoor turf space, group fitness classes and a kids club, inside a larger 100,000-square-foot campus.

Prasada is getting two Marriott hotels in one building

A dual-brand hotel is on the Village at Prasada coming soon list: TownePlace Suites and Fairfield Inn & Suites sharing one building. It joins Portillo's, Shake Shack, Nordstrom Rack, Sierra, Target, Kohl's and Boot Barn on the center's coming soon roster. No opening date has been announced.

Chandler's fall and holiday calendar is already posted

The City of Chandler has published its special events slate through December. Halloween Spooktacular is October 30 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., followed in November by the Chandler Golf Challenge on the 6th, Arbor Day and Diwali: Festival of Lights on the 7th, the Military Appreciation Breakfast on the 13th, the Community Center's 40th birthday celebration on the 19th and Woofstock on the 21st. Santa's House opens December 5.
