Phoenix Public Library is building a new branch at the Estrella Civic Space, along Lower Buckeye Road between 91st and 99th avenues, and it is asking residents to pick the name. Most of the system's 16 branches are named for Sonoran Desert plants, and the five finalists are Cliffrose, Creosote, Jojoba, Manzanita and Senita. Voting is open on the Phoenix Public Library website through Oct. 2, 2026. A design firm has been selected and the project is still in the naming phase.

The Rush Funplex is building a 75,000-square-foot entertainment center at the northeast corner of Loop 202 and Dobbins Road in Laveen, with a grand opening scheduled for December 2026. Go-karts, bowling, mini-golf, bumper cars, laser tag, an arcade and a rock-climbing wall with a foam pit are all planned, and the location is projected to create more than 50 jobs.
Loteria de Arte runs Sept. 12 from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Arizona Latino Arts & Cultural Center, 147 E. Adams St. It is free to attend, with new work from more than 20 local artists, live music, prizes and market vendors.

Mendocino Farms opened Sept. 1 at 4325 E. Indian School Road, Suite 150, its third Valley location after Gainey Ranch and north Scottsdale. The fast-casual chain builds chef-driven sandwiches and salads around peak-season ingredients and keeps a kids' menu. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Phoenix New Times reports the Arizona Chile Festival returns for its sixth year on Sept. 4 at 4025 E. Chandler Blvd. in Ahwatukee. It is free to attend. Expect freshly roasted green chiles for sale, live music, chile tastings and contests including a tortilla toss, plus food trucks and local vendors. Pre-ordering is open for bags of chiles, roasted chiles and hot sauces.

Molly of Denali: An Alaskan Adventure closes Aug. 30 at the Heard Museum. The hands-on experience is set in the fictional Alaskan village of Qyah and lets kids fly a replica bush plane, drive a snow machine and go ice fishing while exploring Alaska Native culture at interactive stations called the Trading Post and Tribal Hall. The Heard lists it as included with museum admission, with add-on fees only on select special event dates.

KTAR reports the Arizona State Fair has set its 2026 dates for October 1 through November 1 at the Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix, open Thursdays through Sundays. Desert Botanical Garden runs Flashlight Nights on Saturdays through Sept. 26, 7 to 9:30 p.m. You walk the trails after dark with a flashlight, looking for night-blooming cactus and nocturnal desert critters. A 15,000 square foot Trader Joe's is going into the former Joann building on the northeast corner of Desert Ridge Marketplace, Arizona's 22nd store, and it will sell beer and wine. No opening date yet, though the liquor license filing puts construction wrapping in November.

The Sleepy Whale is open at 100 E. Camelback Road, Suite 160, in Uptown Plaza. It is the second Valley location of the Chandler beer bar, pouring hard-to-find craft brews alongside a menu that mixes barbecue and bar staples. The new outpost took over two former tenants at the historic plaza and plans to host live music.

After two years at 116 E. Roosevelt St., the locally and women-owned dumpling shop is moving to 1001 N. Central Ave., Suite 100, into roughly 2,984 square feet. Lovebite builds customizable Lovebox bowls over pink rice, noodles or greens. The liquor license application lists Sept. 1 as an estimated renovation completion date; an opening date has not been announced.
