Lost Dutchman State Park's new Sonoran Desert Botany Hike starts Oct. 24 at 8 a.m. from the Palo Verde Day Use Ramada, with more dates through Jan. 30. It is free with paid park entry and limited to the first 12 hikers. Trails can't take strollers; leashed pets are welcome.

Apache Junction's Halloween Festival is Saturday, Oct. 24, 4 to 8 p.m., at Superstition Shadows Park, 1091 W. Southern Ave. It is free, with costume and pumpkin-carving contests, inflatables, kids' games, a Trunk or Treat and activities from local nonprofits.

Arizona State Parks volunteers Lisa and Abi lead the Wildlife of the Sonoran Desert guided hike at Lost Dutchman State Park at 10 a.m. on Oct. 2, 16 and 30, then Nov. 20 and Dec. 4 and 18. It is an Outdoors250 event. The park is also running a monthly Sonoran Desert Botany Hike from October through January and starts Desert Birding on Thursdays in November, 8:30 to 10 a.m. from the Palo Verde day use area. Park entry fees still apply.
Rick McKinney, a four-time USA Olympian and two-time Olympic silver medalist with nearly 50 years of coaching, teaches archery lessons for ages 8 and up on Saturdays, Nov. 7 to 28, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Apache Junction Rodeo Grounds overflow lot, 1590 E. Lost Dutchman Blvd. The four lessons cost $60 and bows, arrows and accessories are provided, the Apache Junction Independent reports. The Apache Junction Public Library has earned the Certified Autism Center designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, the city announced September 15. Staff completed autism and sensory training, the library finished an onsite review, and it is developing sensory guides to help visitors plan a visit. The library also offers sensory kits for children and adults.

The Apache Junction Public Library is throwing a Harry Potter Party on Monday, Sept. 21, from 4 to 6 p.m., per the city calendar. The library screens Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and serves butterbeer, with wizard crafts and activities alongside it. All ages are welcome. It follows the free Mad Science night the city ran at the Multi-Generational Center on Sept. 19, and the city's Halloween Festival, which always lands the Saturday before Halloween, is set for Oct. 24 at 1091 W. Southern Ave.

A path is being designed along the east side of the Central Arizona Project canal in Apache Junction as part of a 336-mile nonmotorized, multiuse trail corridor, the Apache Junction Independent reports. Parks Superintendent Dave Butler told the parks and recreation commission Sept. 2 that the city's portion runs 6 to 7 miles and, unlike most straight-shot segments, includes a loop of just over a mile, with a trailhead off Baseline that gets a ramada, parking and a hitching post for horses. The earliest construction might be 2028.

Lost Dutchman State Park runs its Bioblitz 2026 from 7 to 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19: help the park record as many plants and animals as you can find this fall. Park entry is $20 per vehicle for 2 to 4 people, $10 for one, $5 by bike, cash or card with a stripe. Then the Wildlife of the Sonoran Desert guided hikes start Oct. 2 at 10 a.m., repeating Oct. 16 and 30.

Apache Junction stacks two family events at Flatiron Community Park, 100 N. Apache Trail, on Saturday, Sept. 12. The Power Wheels Derby runs 4:30 to 7 p.m. for drivers ages 2 to 7 in stock 12-volt power wheels only, with car numbers handed out at check-in; helmets are encouraged but not required, and open-toed shoes are not allowed.
